Abstract
Our study is based on two surveys in terms of perspectives of successful aging for the elderly living in Jeju island. First, we conducted participation observation for 10 senior citizens aged over 65 in October, 2012. By creating an environment in which the elderly can communicate openly and asking structured questions, we made it a point to figure out the elderly`s perspective on successful aging. Second, we used a survey towards 372 seniors over 65 on successful aging from November, 2012 to December, 2012. The results of our research are as follows: First, in terms of ``self-efficient life`` category, the elderly responded that happiness is derived from the pursuit of productive living, while in terms of ``fulfilling life through children`s success`` category, they identified their children`s success with their own. When it comes to ``marital partnership``, the elderly equated having a spouse itself with successful aging. With regard to ``self-controlling life``, the elderly saw regular exercise and mind-controlling as a necessity to successful aging. Second, elderly females put more emphasis on such categories as ``self-efficient life,`` ``fulfilling life with children`s success,`` ``self-controlling life,`` whereas elderly males put more emphasis on ``marital partnership`` category - without significant differences in percentages. Based on our research, we hope to play a major role in creating a social foundation in which the elderly in Jeju island can achieve successful aging.
